Library Research Tutorial
Introduction
Welcome to the Library Research Tutorial. The purpose
of this tutorial is to learn the operations of the library's
electronic resources, to develop library research skills,
and use critical thinking skills searching the library's electronic
resources or electronic library. The online catalog and the
electronic resources (databases) discussed are specific to
the William Hessel Library. These are NOT resources that you
access from a search engine.

-
Learn what Boolean
searching is and the operators used. Remember, most databases
allow for Boolean searching. And you will see Boolean mentioned
in the different database tutorials - proof that it is an
important search strategy!
- Why are using subject headings a good
way to search? This tutorial will explain.
- This is the Hessel Library's online
catalog. One can search the in-house holdings (books and audio-visuals)
as well as eBooks. Learn how to check your account, renew materials
online, and the Reserve a Title feature available for students
at the non-Napier campuses.
- This tutorial will introduce you to
eBooks. These are published, copyrighted books, available to read
in electronic format. Over 24,000!
- This database only includes one title
- CQ Researcher - published in print and online 44 tmes
a year. According to the publisher, the single-themed CQ Researcher
report offers "in-depth, non-biased coverage of political
and social issues, with regular reports on topics in health, international
affairs, education, the environment, technology and the U.S. economy
on current topics."
- Several databases are available through
EBSCOhost, including a health related database and a business
database. One of the tutorials will focus on Academic Search
Elite, a multi-disciplinary database (covers all subject areas)
that offers full text for more than 2,000 serials, including more
than 1,500 peer-reviewed titles. There is also an Image Library
available - a great place to look for pictures.
- One of the several categories to search
in Lexis-Nexis is the NEWS category. One can search the
full-text of current and back issues of major newspapers
- some going as far back as 20 years.
- FirstSearch has 30 databases
that you can search. For this tutorial take a look at WilsonSelectPlus,
an online database to full-text articles with 1600 magazines.
- Look here for a listing of terms relating
to what is discussed in the tutorials.
