Library Instruction

The library staff will provide instruction about its resources to classes. Faculty need to schedule classes at least one week in advance. Instructors are to remain with the class during the library presentation. Students retain more from a library instruction session if it is scheduled at a time when library use is necessary to complete a class assignment. Sessions can be tailored to a specific class assignment.

Overview of Library Instruction

Good research requires using the library's subscription databases.

Searching for electronic information is part of academic life for the average college student. But many students only rely on the public Web, not realizing that the library subscribes to online databases containing full-text information from magazines and books. These databases must be accessed directly from the William Hessel Library home page as they are not searchable through search engines.

Bringing in your students for a library session will help your students to:

  • Identify different types of databases (general, education, business, music, biographical).
  • Identify the different sources searchable from these databases (magazines, newspapers, books, reference, annual reports, news transcripts, audio-visual).
  • Set up searches correctly.
  • Locate full-text articles (magazines and newspapers) and even full-text books (eBooks) electronically.
  • Learn how to narrow down a topic.

A session will include:

  • An online demonstration of selected online databases.
  • Explanation of how to electronically request items through interlibrary loan from selected databases.
  • Hands on searching for Freshman Seminar classes and possibly other classes.

Please schedule a session by contacting:

Diane Baker, Reference Librarian/Interim Director, at extension 5128 or baker@lakemichigancollege.edu.
