BENTON HARBOR, MICH. –  The Lake Michigan College Mendel Center will host retired, decorated 20-year New York City Fire Department firefighter and 9/11 World Trade Center survivor Tim Brown as the second guest presenter during the 2024-2025 LMC Speaker Series at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, in Hanson Theatre.

During his LMC Speakers Series presentation “Truth in History, Patience in Grief,” Brown shares his powerful story of survival and loss and of the heroes and horrors of 9/11.

In addition to surviving the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Brown was a first responder to the 1993 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and is a veteran of the New York Urban Search & Rescue Task Force team that responded to the 1995 terrorist attack on the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City. Brown lost 93 of his friends on Sept. 11th, including his two best friends.

Following his last FDNY assignment with Rescue Co. 3 in The Bronx, Brown was Supervisor of Field Operations for four years in Mayor Giuliani’s Office of Emergency Management. Brown spent two years on special detail to the federal government, serving as a special assistant to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. While with the HHS Public Health Emergency Preparedness group, he was a founding member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

In 2003, Rhode Island Governor Don Carcieri asked for assistance in dealing with the aftermath of the Station Nightclub fire that killed 100 people. HHS sent Brown to assist the governor in victim identification and creating and managing the family assistance program. He advised the governor for nearly two years and helped Rhode Island rebuild its homeland security and emergency management organizations.

Since 2012, Brown has served on the U.S. Department of Defense’s 9/11 Prosecution Task Force in the case United States vs Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, et al. He is liaison to the 9/11 families, survivors, victims, witnesses, and other government entities for the lead prosecutor. He maintains a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information clearance.

Brown has been a leader in defending the memory of those lost on 9/11 at Ground Zero. He is a media commentator on the subject, appearing on Fox News, CNN, MSBNC, and CNBC; dozens of local news programs; and in documentaries.

Tickets for Brown’s presentation are $50 and may be purchased online 24/7 at www.TheMendelCenter.com/events.
