The driving forces in society
When people use the word ‘culture,’ you might think of fine art, classic music or indie movies. But culture is really about the forces that help shape our choices as a society. So, for example – say you like country music. Chances are, some of your friends and family do, too. That influence is a force that could affect your preference. Sociology uncovers those forces and analyzes how they affect decisions and choices in a culture. Many sociology majors go on to teach, research or consult.
Social work offers a more hands-on approach to these lessons. As a social worker, you could find a safe home for kids or meals for the elderly. Understanding the forces shaping society helps you navigate them, ultimately getting your clients the resources they need.
Why study sociology and social work at LMC?
Nothing happens in a vacuum. You’ve heard this a million times – but sociology teaches you what it means. You’ll learn about social forces and how they influence behavior and decisions.
Change will do you good. Those social forces are also how change in society happens. With a combination of lectures and class discussions, you’ll learn to identify patterns, analyze movements and understand social change.
Expand your horizons. Careers in sociology are more common than you might think. Researching and teaching are more traditional routes, but you could also consult with governments and other businesses. If you’re looking to help people on a day-to-day basis, social work is a challenging – but rewarding – career in the sociology field.
