Nomination Procedure
The following procedures apply for the nomination of full-time teaching faculty who retire from Lake Michigan College for appointment to Professor Emeritus status.
- Any current member of LMC’s full-time teaching faculty may nominate an individual for professor emeritus status using the approved nomination form (Appendix A), which shall be submitted to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs within six (6) months prior to or six (6) months after the nominees official date of retirement. In addition to the cover form, the nomination shall consist of at least three letters of support from current or retired LMC teaching faculty, one of whom must be the person originating the nomination. The letters of support shall address the eligibility criteria per the Professor Emeritus Policy.
- The Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, or her/his designee, shall inform the faculty member that s/he has been nominated for professor emeritus status and ascertain that s/he acquiesces to the nomination. In the event that the nominee declines the nomination, the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, or her/his designee, shall notify the person who submitted the nomination that it will not be considered in accordance with the nominee’s desires.
- If the nominee accepts the nomination, the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, or her/his designee, shall convene an ad hoc committee comprised of five full-time teaching faculty selected by the Faculty Association to review nominations for appointment to the status of professor emeritus. The Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, or her/his designee, will also serve on the committee.
- The Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, or her/his designee, will forward all nominations and letters of support to the committee for review in advance of the committee’s first meeting.
- The ad hoc committee shall elect a chair from among its members at its first meeting.
- The ad hoc committee shall consider the nominations. The Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs shall submit the committee’s recommendation to the College President within 60 days of receiving the nomination.
- The College President, upon review and approval of the committee’s recommendation, shall forward the nomination to the Lake Michigan College Board of Trustees at its next regular meeting. There is neither an expectation nor requirement for a nomination to be made for this honor each year. Further, no more than one Professor Emeritus award can be conveyed in any given year, although the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, with the approval of the President, may request that the Board of Trustees make an exception.
